Instructions for Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) Application
Appliance & Preventive Care
How to Use / Wear
The application of SDF is a simple and painless process. To ensure the best results, please follow these instructions immediately after your appointment.
- Do not eat or drink for at least one hour after the application. This allows the SDF to fully penetrate and treat the tooth.
- You may notice a temporary metallic taste in your mouth. This is normal and will fade quickly.
- About Mucosal Stains: While we take great care to protect your gums and lips, a temporary brown or white stain (a mucosal stain) may appear on the soft tissue if it comes into contact with the SDF. This is not harmful and is not a burn. It will typically exfoliate and disappear on its own within a few days to two weeks as your skin naturally renews itself.
Cleaning & Maintenance
Proper home care is essential for the long-term success of the SDF treatment.
- You may resume normal brushing and flossing tonight. It is important to keep the treated area clean to prevent new plaque from forming on top of the arrested decay.
- Remember that while SDF has stopped the existing cavity, it does not prevent new cavities from forming. Continue with your regular hygiene routine and a healthy diet.
- SDF is often the first step in a larger treatment plan. We will discuss the next steps, which may include placing a filling or crown over the treated area in the future to restore the tooth’s shape and color.
What To Expect
This is the most important part of understanding your SDF treatment.
- The Silver Diamine Fluoride will permanently stain the decayed (cavity) portion of your tooth black.
- This is a positive sign and is the expected outcome. The black color is confirmation that the cavity has been arrested and the bacteria have been eliminated.
- SDF will NOT stain healthy, sound enamel. Only the soft, decayed areas will change color.
Frequently Asked Questions
While one application is effective at stopping the cavity, the best long-term results are achieved with periodic reapplication. We will assess the tooth at each of your recall visits and reapply SDF as needed to make sure the decay remains inactive.
No, it is a very good sign! The black color is a direct result of the silver in the SDF reacting with the decayed tooth structure and stopping the cavity. It is visible proof that the treatment is working as intended.
Yes, the black stain on the decayed part of the tooth is permanent. However, once the tooth is stable and the decay is fully arrested, the black area can often be cosmetically restored by covering it with a tooth-colored filling or a crown.
Yes, SDF is an FDA-approved treatment that has been used safely and effectively around the world for many years. It is a very conservative and non-invasive way to manage cavities.
Important Contraindication: SDF should not be used on patients with a known silver allergy. This is why it’s crucial to discuss your full medical history with us before any treatment.
