Patient Guide for Resin Infiltration (ICON)
Caring For Your Enhanced Smile
Managing Tooth Sensitivity
Resin infiltration is a minimally invasive procedure that does not typically require anesthetic or drilling. As a result, post-treatment sensitivity is uncommon.
Immediate Post-Treatment Appearance
- Enamel Dehydration: It is normal for your teeth to look chalky or unevenly colored immediately after the procedure. This is an expected part of the process caused by temporary dehydration of the enamel.
- Rehydration is Key: The tooth’s final, more blended color will appear over the next 24-48 hours as it naturally rehydrates. It is important to wait at least two days before assessing the final outcome.
- Gum Tissue Irritation: To protect your gums during the procedure, a protective barrier is used. It is normal to have some mild irritation or temporary white spots (blanching) on the gums afterward. This is not harmful and typically resolves within a day.
Maintaining Results (Diet & Habits)
The resin material used to infiltrate the tooth is porous for the first 48 hours and can absorb stains from dark-colored foods and drinks. To ensure the best long-term outcome, it is critical to avoid the following during this period.
Foods and Drinks to AVOID for 48 Hours:
- Dark-Colored Drinks: Coffee, tea, red wine, colas, etc.
- Dark-Colored Sauces: Soy sauce, marinara sauce, mustard, etc.
- Colorful Foods: Berries, beets, dark chocolate, etc.
- All Tobacco Products.
Long-Term Care and a Critical Note on Toothpastes
- After 48 hours, you can return to your normal diet. Care for the treated teeth with regular, gentle brushing and flossing.
- We strongly advise against using any whitening toothpastes. They are highly abrasive and can scratch or dull the polished resin surface over time, which can lead to new staining and loss of healthy enamel.
Frequently Asked Questions
Our philosophy is always to start with the most conservative treatment that preserves your natural tooth. ICON is the best first step as it requires no drilling. For many spots, it provides a fantastic result. If a faint outline remains after treatment, the next conservative step is often a simple resin restoration (bonding) to camouflage the remaining spot. This stepwise approach ensures we preserve the maximum amount of your healthy tooth structure.
High-quality randomized controlled studies have followed patients for many years after ICON treatment. This research shows that the cosmetic improvement is very stable and can last for 6 years or even longer in many patients. It is a durable, long-term solution for improving the appearance of white spots.
Yes. While the ideal sequence is to whiten your teeth before the ICON procedure, you can still whiten afterward. The whitening agent is able to penetrate the resin and lighten the underlying natural tooth.
The immediate appearance is not the final result. The tooth’s color and texture will continue to change and blend more naturally over the next 24-48 hours as it fully rehydrates. This is a normal and expected part of the process.
